Who is Drake?

Graham, Aubrey Drake, born October 24, 1986, is a rapper, singer, and songwriter from Canada. 

Drake, a major player in modern music, is often credited with introducing singing and R&B influences into hip-hop. 

In 2006, he released his first mixtape, Room for Improvement, which gained his attention after his role as Jimmy Brooks in the CTV adolescent drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001-08). 

Before joining Young Money Entertainment, he released the mixtapes Comeback Season and So Far Gone.

Critically acclaimed and widely popular. Drake’s first three albums, Take Care and Nothing Was the Same, catapulted him to the top of hip hop. 

His 2016 album Views featured the worldwide smash hits “Hotline Bling” and “One Dance”. He is credited with popularizing Afrobeats worldwide. 

Explored Dancehall was the first album by a male artist to top the Billboard 200 for over a decade.

Singles “God’s Plan,” “Nice for What,” and “In My Feelings” from Drake’s 2018 double album Scorpion topped the Billboard Hot 100. 

The lead single “Way 2 Sexy” from Drake’s sixth album, Certified Lover Boy (2021), topped the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of the most successful singles in US chart history.

Early Life & Education

Drake, Aubrey On October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Ontario, Graham entered the world. His dad, Memphis-born African-American Catholic drummer Dennis Graham, used to play with Jerry Lee Lewis and is a family name.

His Canadian Ashkenazi Jewish mother, Sandra “Sandi” Graham (née Sher), was an English teacher and a florist.

Graham met Sandra when she went to see him play at Toronto’s Club Bluenote. Drake was born in Canada to American parents, the Grahams. He became a bar mitzvah at a Jewish day school as a young man.

After his parents split up, Drake and his mother stayed in Toronto while his father moved back to Memphis and spent several years in prison for drug offences.

Due to financial and legal constraints, Graham stayed in the United States until Drake was a young adult. 

Graham used to make annual summer trips to Toronto to bring Drake back to Memphis before he was arrested.

A music video for a song named “Drake’s Dad” features both his father and the Canadian band Arkells. 

In an interview, Graham suggested that Drake’s claims about him being an absent father were exaggerations designed to boost album sales. Drake has denied these allegations.

Drake spent his childhood in two separate communities. Until the sixth grade, he resided on Weston Road in Toronto’s working-class west end.

Where he went to Weston Memorial Junior Public School and suited up for the Weston Red Wings of minor hockey.

Drake was a talented right winger who made it to the Upper Canada College hockey camp before his mother pulled him out after he suffered a nasty cross-check to the neck.

In 2000, he relocated to Forest Hill, a wealthy section of town. Drake explained the relocation: “[We] a half of a house we could live in.” We were given the lower half of the room while the others had the top. 

My mom was on the main floor, and I was down in the cellar. It could have been a more spacious or opulent space. It was the most reasonable option.

At ten years old, Drake became interested in the arts and performed a comedy routine about Martin Brodeur and Ron Hextall, the only NHL goalies in history to score more than one goal. The 1997 NHL Awards broadcasted the routine.

After graduating from Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, Drake attended Vaughan Road Academy in Toronto’s multiethnic Oakwood-Vaughan neighbourhood. 

Drake spent his teenage years working at his maternal grandfather Reuben Sher’s now-defunct Toronto furniture factory. 

Drake claimed he was harassed because of his race and religion in school. He eventually decided that continuing his acting studies would be counterproductive to his career and quit. In October 2012, he graduated.

Career

Drake’s first step on the road to fame was an acting role in the Canadian teen serial opera Degrassi when he was just 15 years old. 

Drake made a total of 100 appearances between 2001 and 2008 as basketball phenom Jimmy Brooks. 

Drake left the series in 2008 to focus on his music career. The actor claimed he would work a full day on the teen soap opera set before heading to the recording studio until about 5 a.m.

Drake’s passion for hip-hop and lyrical writing began during his time on Degrassi. Before leaving the show for good in 2006, he released his first mixtape, Room for Improvement.

On his own with guest appearances from Trey Songz and Lupe Fiasco. He said there were “seventeen original tracks and a couple of remixes and stuff like that” on the mixtape.

Coming out in 2007, ‘Comeback Season’ was his second mixtape. Drake’s final appearance on Degrassi occurred in the show’s eighth and final season the following year.

Drake followed up his 2008 “Take Care” mixtape with “So Far Gone” in 2009. which included Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Bun B, and hits. Including “Best I Ever Had” and “Successful.” 

Drake’s EP, Views, sold over 2,000 copies in its first two hours on the market. Ultimately, he signed with Young Money, Lil Wayne’s record label, the same year.

The label reissued the mixtape as an EP with new songs. Including “I’m Goin’ In” and “Fear,” in addition to the four songs from the original CD. 

The EP entered the charts at position #6 and went on to win the 2010 Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year.

After the label’s July 2009 “America’s Most Wanted Tour.” Drake finally joined the rest of his label mates on the road.

Drake’s first appearance as a signed artist was on the hit single “Bed Rock” from their debut album as a group. We Are Young Money. 

Nicki Minaj initially performed the single. However, other notable artists like Drake, Lil Wayne, Tyga, Gudda Gudda, Lloyd, and Jae Millz have all appeared on the five remixes of “BedRock” released thus far.

The song’s official music video features Drake and the rest of the Young Money team having a good time at home, where they throw a house party. 

The song “Bed Rock” climbed to the top of the US Billboard Hot 100. and the UK Singles Chart, where it spent some time in the top ten.

Jack Harlow’s second studio album, “Come Home the Kids Miss You,” was released in 2022. The album featured the smash song “First Class,” which sampled Fergie’s “Glamorous.” 

In addition to the uplifting single, the album featured a duet with none other than Drake.

They worked together on a song called “Churchill Downs,” on June 1, 2022, they dropped a music video for it.

Drake, unable to attend the 2023 Grammy Awards in person, won Best Melodic Rap Performance for “Wait For U.”

Who is Sandi Graham, the mother of Drake?

Sandi Graham arrived on January 28, 1960. Drake’s musical ancestry goes further back than just his dad. His mom Sandi was also a huge music buff. 

Her mother (Drake’s grandmother) babysat for the legendary Aretha Franklin when she was a child. The mother actively supported her son’s musical pursuits. 

She kept an eye on his grades and enrolled him in ballet courses. Drake also participated in the school’s dramatics club.

Their son was just five years old when she and her husband, Dennis, had a divorce. Her brother, a successful businessman, helped raise Drake.

Who is Dennis Graham the father of Drake?

Dennis was formerly a famous musician and even played in a band with the legendary Jerry Lee Lewis. He made a poor decision when he abandoned his music career to pursue a life of drug abuse. 

Dennis Graham was hauled off to jail one day after being caught with drugs. After that, he told his wife he would give up narcotics but eventually relapsed. Then she started the divorce process.

Dennis may have struggled with drugs, but it didn’t stop him from being a wonderful dad. Aubrey, now known as Drake, stayed in touch with him and supported his musical interests. 

Drake owes much to his guidance, as he suggested combining rapping and lyrical singing.

Addiction was a problem that Dennis Graham was able to overcome. He still makes music and regularly publishes new songs, albeit his son’s music has more of an audience.
