James Joseph Norton’s place of birth was Bayonne. His mother was a librarian, while his father was a postal service driver and Marine Corps and Army Reserve veteran. Norton and his sister Tracy lived in North Brunswick, New Jersey, during his formative years.
Norton went to North Brunswick High School, but he left before finishing his diploma requirements. At 13, Norton began drinking heavily, “mostly vodka and grain alcohol” since it made him inebriated more rapidly.
It was merely a routine that helped me relax. I had terrible self-esteem issues, was painfully timid, and often felt unattractive and weak.
Norton began self-injuring with a razor when he was 16 for “attention-seeking… A bunch of “look at me!” hogwash. At the age of 16 or 17, I started drinking. I never did any of that while under the influence.
His worried parents sent him to a treatment clinic in Princeton, New Jersey, for a month, where he continued to smuggle alcohol but eventually changed his mind and finished the course at 18.
His classmates elected him a class clown while he was absent. On New Year’s Eve 1985/86, Norton drank his last drink and hasn’t touched alcohol or drugs since.
Norton’s hedonistic tendencies manifested differently after he stopped drinking and doing drugs.
After around three years of sobriety, Norton got his GED, enrolled at Middlesex County College to study for a Juris Doctor to become a lawyer, and dropped out after a month. He did poorly in all his other classes except English, where he received a B.
Working in a copper firm as a forklift operator unloading packaged copper tubes from lorries was his “awful” first job when he turned 18.
At the young age of 23, he was sacked from his work before deciding to pursue comedy as a career. Norton earned unemployment benefits for several years while performing at local comedy clubs on the side.
Career
When Norton was 12 years old, he decided he wanted to be a stand-up comedian for a living.
He got into humour because his mom would bring home CDs by Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Woody Allen, and Robert Klein. from the office, and he credits his mom for sparking his interest in the genre. At age 21, Norton gave his first stand-up comedy performance.
During an open mic night at a Sayreville, New Jersey bar called Varsity in April 1990. He said in retrospect that it was an “awful” performance.
After his first success, Norton spent the next five years honing his stand-up skills by performing throughout New York, New Jersey, Boston, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Florida.
