Kristalina Georgieva, the wife of Kino Kinov born August 13 1953, has held the position of managing director of the International Monetary Fund.

After Jim Yong Kim’s retirement, she served as Acting President of the World Bank Group from February 1 to April 8, 2019.

She was World Bank Group Chief Executive from 2017 to 2019. She was Jean-Claude Juncker’s Vice President of the European Commission from 2014 to 2016.

During her time as CEO of the World Bank in 2021, Georgieva was found to have ordered workers to manipulate data in favour of China.

Georgieva’s ancestors were officials, and she was born in their Sofia home.

Early life

Her grandpa, Ivan Karshovski, led the Bulgarian Revolution, and her father, a civil engineer, handled governmental road-building projects.

Sofia’s now-defunct Karl Marx Higher Institute of Economics awarded Georgieva her PhD and MA in Economics, Political Economy, and Sociology.

In the late 1980s, she studied environmental policy and natural resource economics at the London School of Economics and MIT.

She wrote a microeconomics textbook and 100 academic articles. Furthermore, she has held several academic and consulting positions in Bulgaria and the United States.

Georgieva began her work in environmental economics in 1993 when she joined the World Bank Group.

Afterwards, she moved up the ranks to head the department responsible for the World Bank’s environmental strategy, policy, and lending.

Approximately 60% of the World Bank Group’s lending operations fell under her purview. She oversaw operations and represented the organization in Moscow, the Russian Federation, from 2004 to 2007.

After some time apart, she accepted a position as director of strategy and operations for sustainable development in Washington, DC.

Her last post at the World Bank was vice president and corporate secretary, which gave her primary responsibility for communicating with the bank’s owners (the governments of the member countries).

During that period, she contributed to the bank’s capital growth and reform of its governance.

In January of that year, Georgieva stated that she would resign from her position due to her nomination to the European Union Commission.

Kristalina Georgieva career

Rumiana Jeleva, Bulgaria’s initial nominee for the European Commissioners for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management position.

Withdrew after receiving criticism from European Parliament members who questioned her competence.

And claimed there were gaps in her declaration of financial interests during her confirmation hearing. The Bulgarian government subsequently suggested Kristalina Georgieva.

Mrs Georgieva has substantial international expertise and skills with which she will contribute considerably to her position.

On February 4, 2010, Georgieva appeared before a confirmation hearing in the European Parliament. Her qualifications for the portfolio were questioned.

Rebuilding and long-term growth in Haiti were high on Georgieva’s list of concerns, as was the provision of necessities like shelter and healthcare and the restoration of government services.

She began her World Bank career in 1993 and held various jobs before becoming vice president and corporate secretary in March 2008.

She has taught at Bulgaria’s University of National and World Economy as an economics department associate professor and member of the board of trustees.

The Bulgarian government proposed Kristalina Georgieva as the next United Nations Secretary-General on September 27, 2016.

The United Nations Security Council voted on Georgieva for secretary-general on October 5. Kristalina Georgieva came in eighth place, ending her brief campaign.

Security Council members backed António Guterres in his bid. for UN Secretary-General in the same vote.

As on January 2, 2017, Georgieva will lead the International Bank for Recovery and Development and the International Development Association (IDA).

As their first chief executive officer, a position she was appointed to on October 28 last year.

Shareholders of the World Bank approved a $13 billion paid-in capital increase, a series of company reforms, and policy measures.

On April 21, 2018, improved the organization’s capacity to expand its anti-poverty efforts and better serve the world’s poorest regions.

This was the largest funding boost in the bank’s history. And Georgieva was instrumental in achieving it.

Kim’s resignation as president of the World Bank Group was announced on January 7, 2019.

Georgieva’s appointment as interim president of the World Bank Group was set for February 1, 2019.

The International Monetary Fund announced Georgieva. as its new managing director on September 29.

She was the sole candidate and the first person from a developing nation to hold this position.

According to a 2021 investigation by the law firm WilmerHale into the World Bank’s Doing Business reports. Georgieva had instructed staff to manipulate data to raise China’s ranks.

While serving as head of the World Bank in 2018. Georgieva was accused of manipulating the annual Doing Business Report in October 2021 by the IMF’s executive board.

Later, the board concluded that the investigation “did not conclusively demonstrate” that she acted improperly and reaffirmed its faith in Georgieva’s leadership.
