Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer, who won millions on Jeopardy!, have fascinated viewers for decades. 

In June, Middletown’s 17-year-old Jackson Jones competed in Jeopardy! Teen Tournament, drawing local fans.   

Jackson became a Louisville celebrity after his visits were publicized. Friends, neighbours, and even strangers messaged about his TV debut. 

His high school counsellor Heidi Weber announced his attendance at the Junior Ring Ceremony. The Courier-Journal and WKLY covered him.

Jackson’s mother, Noelle McCloud, lives in Middletown for ten years. He attended Stopher Elementary, Crosby Middle School, and Eastern High. 

Math and world history are his favourite subjects. He has enjoyed being the yearbook editor-in-chief and a member of the Academic Team since fifth grade.

He recalls, “I applied for the yearbook because most of my friends were applying and I like graphic arts.” “As editor-in-chief, I manage the production.” Jackson says he learned a lot by reading and trying out for Jeopardy! He reads to learn.

He says he has not had a favourite subject or genre for his novels. Jackson prefers fiction and non-fiction. Half-Price Books is his favourite bookstore.

Jackson watches Jeopardy! Since childhood. The fifth-grader auditioned for the show. Applicants must answer 50 online questions in 15 seconds. After his initial audition, Jackson has yet to hear back.

After his eighth-grade online test, he was invited to an audition two days later. He and his mother auditioned in Raleigh, North Carolina, but he was not called back.

Last March, Jackson completed the online test again and received an email two months later inviting him to audition. He prepared for the show by studying numerous subjects and using a pen with a “clicker” to replicate the buzzer.

He says he reviewed stuff he needed clarification on. “I love reading about wars and battles and studying different science fields.”

He travelled with his mother from Louisville to Kansas City, Missouri, to attend the June audition. They both acknowledged that the 10-hour journey was gruelling.

He and his mum arrived two days early to check into their hotel and sightseeing before the audition.

On audition day, you arrived. “The first thing you do is take another 50-question test, but you write down the answers before typing them in as you would on the computer,” Jackson adds. 

The next step is to participate in a simulated game with two other hopefuls in person. After the game, you tell two anecdotes about yourself, and that’s it.”

A Jeopardy! After his third attempt, a producer informed Jackson that he would be a contestant. December 2018 was taped.

Jackson and Noelle travelled to Los Angeles for the Teen Tournament taping. Universal Studios hotels house contestants and their families.
